DESCRIPTION: Rio Grande rugs, woven primarily by Hispanic weavers in New Mexico from the 18th through early 20th centuries, are known for their bold stripes and banded designs influenced by both Spanish Colonial and Indigenous weaving traditions. These textiles often feature natural wool tones, black, brown, gray, and white. They sometimes accented with indigo or cochineal red, and were originally made as blankets or utilitarian textiles.
